Arriving, riots, and the offroad bus ride to Dangriga
04.22
Day 1 6 a.m. flight from Los Angeles, to Houston, then to Belize. After arriving we went straight to the Budget Rental Car where we reserved a SUV for later. This is where we discovered most of the telecommunications around Belize was down because the telecommunications company BTL went on strike. As a result there were riots and some violence in the city. Four Chinese residents were killed. Maria, the woman who worked at Budget told us the details while giving us a ride to Belize City.

In Belize City, we signed up for a bus ride down to Dangriga where we planned on staying the night. We accidentally took the slower, non-express bus down to Dangriga. It was an adventure traveling on the bumpy dirt roads at speeds of around 50mph. Amazingly, everyone in our group managed to fall asleep in the bus except Jeremy. He didn't sleep because he thought some pastries we bought at the bus stop were tainted to make us fall asleep so someone could rob us. This wasn't the case, we were just tired.

By night time and several stops later, we arrived at the Dangriga bus station. From there, we squeezed into a taxi to go to Pelican Beach Resort where we planned on staying for the night. At the resort, we ate dinner which was okay. During dinner the power shut off but eventually turned back on. After dinner we went to our rooms and slept.
