Day 4
We woke up early for breakfast and diving around 9am. The food at the resort is great. Eddie has some of the best orange juice I've ever had. It's straight from his farm on the mainland in Belize.
Diving was good and some of the highlights we saw were: jellyfish, tiger grouper, ocean triggerfish, and a rare toadfish. Between our dives, we hung out at Long Caye where
Slickrock Adventures
is based. It was interesting visiting this place again and going to the same spots I took photos of before. Some things haven't really changed. Lots of iguanas on the island.
In the evening the group set out for a night dive near Isla Marisol. Descending from the boat was a little chaotic. A diver descending on me, my bouyancy was off, my flashlight was dangling out of control on my left wrist while my right hand held my camera. It was too much to handle because I needed two hands to control the camera housing and another for the flashlight.
Needing to fix my dangling flashlight, I put the camera's wristband on my right wrist. I secured the flashlight, turned to my right hand, and noticed the camera wasn't attached to my wrist anymore! We were drifting so it must have fallen behind me. I looked back with the flashlight and just saw complete darkness. At the same time the group was drifting the opposite direction. It was lost. I didn't want to risk looking for it away from the group or turning the dive into a search and rescue dive for my camera.
Besides losing the $1300 camera setup, the dive was awesome. At night, everyone looked like hovering spotlights searching the landscape. The water contained bioluminescent plankton so when you waved your hand it would glow. We saw a large sleeping turtle, two spotted moray eels, a huge lobster, spotted drumfish, and a scorpionfish. When I surfaced I just saw stars. It was beautiful. By far the best dive.
See the colors...
