Flores, Komodo, & Rinca
Flores, an island just east of Komodo and Rinca islands, was our launching point for diving the area. Sander and I stayed in the small town of Labuan Bajo, where we took long boat rides out to dive around Komodo and Rinca. The area is known for its endemic Komodo dragons, strong currents, and big fish. We hoped to see it all.
The first thing I noticed when diving in Komodo was how good the visibility was in the water. Additionally, certain dives had an incredibly high concentration of fish. We did see a couple manta rays, but I was expecting to see more. Regardless, diving Komodo was still very good. Seeing Komodo dragons walk around the island of Rinca was great - like watching living dinosaurs in the wild. We even got to see a Komodo dragon chase another one away from her nest.
Sander and I spent our last day on Flores sightseeing around the area with rented motorbikes. In a small village, we met a bunch of local kids that were curiously happy to see us. It was nice driving around the curvy roads until my motorbike fell on a slippery turn and I scraped my knees. The scrap wasn't too bad, but I was worried about infection and it preventing me from diving, at least comfortably.
